BOXERS & BUTTERFLIES: The Science of Celestial Signatures

Medical, psychological and vocational astrologers sometimes refer to astrological “signatures”. Planets, signs, houses, aspects…just about any astrological tool might contribute to a specific signature. But first, what is an astrological signature?
An astrological signature is a complex mix of interworking astrological parts that potentially indicate a quite specific characteristic, talent, vocational preference or disease. In fact, there are signatures for everything! There exist signatures for cat lovers, ice dancers, diabetes, and so forth. Signature identification is a subtle art, requiring keen observation, years of chart reading experience, and a memory in good working order. However, we can all learn a few basic signatures early on in our astrological practices!
Signatures teach us that there are multiple ways to suggest a similar trait.
For instance, in my recent class ‘The Medical Astrology of Sports’, we examined a number of signatures typical of professional boxers. For instance, a boxer requires fast fists. What then, are some signatures for hand reflex speed? This trait will appear in variation as each chart is unique.
Astrological variations reflect this needful trait in multiple ways. Speedy punching ability is primarily shown by close orb Mercury-Mars-Uranus aspects, exchanges of beams, and masculine signs. However, we also note that a good exchange between Mars and Mercury in Scorpio-Capricorn will suffice. Although Capricorn and Scorpio are centripetal ‘feminine signs’, these two signs remain those of fighting Mars’ rulership and exaltation.
How do the variations work out? One boxer might have Mars-Mercury conjunct in Gemini (sign of the hands). A second boxer has these same planets trining in Air signs, with Uranus (genius) conjoined Mercury (hands). Often, we see planets in Gemini (shoulders, arms, hands), and Leo (co-rules forearm). ‘Quincunxes’ from Mars and Mercury to other planets quite common in these charts - as are all quincunxes! This might be explained by the nature of the quincunx to deliver rude surprises and shocks.

We now build upon these specific trait signatures to complete the character profile, or “master signature” necessary for boxing. After all, fast hands could just as well indicate a speed typist, whereas fast reflexes are great for tap dancing! So, what other traits are needful to the successful professional boxer?
Boxing Signatures (example)
An aspiring boxer requires exceptional courage, stamina, arm strength, endurance, toughness, plus they can’t be overly self-sensitive because they are going to get hit! So, we foresee that a combination of these traits would also likely to be found in natal charts of most dedicated boxers. Fast hands alone is just one signature. A master signature is comprised of many subordinate signatures.
The heavy weight “boxer signature” revealed deficient water signs, and dominant high earth signs. (Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Joe Frazier of the most famous were Capricorns and Joe Lewis was a Taurus.) Many are double earth, or have the earthy planet Saturn strongly placed. Earth signs reveal strong, dense bones, endurance, stamina, and a high pain threshold. These fighters show balanced amounts of fire and air, with Mars and Mercury frequently (but not always) in the masculine element. This combination allows for traits of explosiveness, and increased reflex speed.
Combativeness is also indicated by Mars-Mercury. However, this could be purely verbal, as we see in the charts of lawyers. We need more! The deadly planets Pluto, Saturn and Mars are dominant in boxer’s charts in any number of traditional ways. Saturn and Mars are often in harmonious aspect to each other, or conjunct. We see these two malefics, and/or Pluto either nearest to, or flanking the angles (especially the Ascendant or MidHeaven), or conjunct the Sun, or North Node. Saturn and Mars provide the needed strength and rigor. Curiously, Venus is often in a sextile or trine to Mars or Saturn.
The neurologically stimulating planet Uranus is often assisting hand speed by close orb aspects of any kind with Mercury and Mars. Uranus can indicate exceptional gifts, and genius.

And last, but not least, the ‘empathetic planets’ Venus and Moon are decidedly not ruling traits in these charts. Low water and a “toughened” Moon allows one to endure pain without complaint. Neither can a boxer be too sensitive about pummeling others.
For boxing, the sense of physical self confidence is unusually high. This manifests as emphasis in houses 1, 2, 3, 5th house. A strong 7th house brings in the love of competition! Additionally, certain degrees stand out, but that is too much for this brief article. This is just a sample of astrological traits shared between boxers.
Boxing and Synchronized Swimming Compared
Class exploration revealed that an Olympian heavy weight boxer’s master signature is radically different from that of Gold Medal synchronized swimmer! A dedicated synchronized swimmer spends hours each day harmonizing with their team. Individuality is low, and traits of grace, beauty, cooperation are high! We also might look for hydrophillic (water loving) traits. Strong water signs, plus a dominant Neptune, Moon, perhaps Venus. And of course, all athletes have a notable Mars. How might the master signatures of Olympian level synchronized swimmers and heavy weight boxers vary?
Conversely, our Olympian synchronized swimmer’s chart revealed a Pisces ascendant with a right hemisphere focus. This is a strong indication of low individuality, adaptability, and social agility. The chart showed many features suggestive of exceptional grace, beauty appreciation, group cooperation and team work. The 6th, 7th and 8th houses were dominant (working with others). Elements were balanced. However, this mermaid’s chart showed considerably more mutable and water emphasis than did any of the comparative boxer’s charts. Synchronized swimmers compete in team display, so we do not see the direct, immediate, and dangerous competition required for boxers. Albeit that both sports require strength, stamina and agility, in truth the chart signatures are wildly different!

The astrologer who reads charts daily, possessed of a good memory, will absorb the “look” of hundreds of signatures over their decades. One then builds “master signatures” from sub signatures. You reach a point where you can glance at a chart and instantly know you are looking at a chemist or a dancer! It is rather like learning to drive - oh so daunting at first and then becomes second nature. Synthetic interpretation is at the very heart of astrological interpretation. Understanding how astrological ‘sub-signatures’ convene into ‘master signatures’ allows the practitioner great interpretive depth.
A good mental bank of planetary and sign signatures is essential to the reader because these serve both specificity and intuition. The individual nature of charts has been elusive to ‘proving’ astrology because tests, in their pursuit of black/white result, fail to include signatures. However, it is exactly this approach that could eventually prove the truth of astrology.
What became very clear in our class was that a pile of charts belonging to professional lifetime boxers could be sorted out from a horoscopic pile of dedicated synchronized swimmers as easily as sorting apples from oranges. That would potentially happen if the chosen test subjects were long time professional astrologers who were highly experienced with in-person vocational, medical, astro-physical and natal analysis (all three). These astrologers would have the all around “chops” for the job.
However, due the very nature of individuality, I would guesstimate thee chart-sorting success of this savvy group to rate at 70-80%. Why not higher? Because there will always be that singular boxer who yearns to be a synchronized swimmer! Conversely, there will always be that solitary synchronized swimmer who dreams of becoming a world class boxer! Such is the elusive nature of individuality!
